Default Speedometer works intermittantly

Allright guys, i need your help.

1995 civic ex
d16z6
ABS
Manual tranny

heres the deal. every once in a while the speedo will jump around -/+ 5 mph. also sometimes it wont work, and when it kicks back on the needle jumps to 100mph and will continue around the speedo until it gets to the stop pin.

what ive done for the time being is taken off the clear cluster cover so when it doesnt work i just flick the speedo and it hops to where it should be.

this really isnt a big problem it just pisses me off.

so if you guys have had this problem or know of a way to fix it without getting a new cluster chime in.

Is it the cluster, or maybe a bad VSS.

i dont think its a speed sensor bc when it is working, it reads the correct speed. (based on knowledge of gear ratios and engine speed.)

Well, had a 2000 civic that did a similar thing and a new VSS fixed it. That's my only experience with it.

well see when i flick it it jumps back on. so if it was the speed sensor flicking it would have no affect. thanx anyways bro.

im having the same problem with my LX right now...i got a new cluster...but didn't put it in cuz it was the wrong one But like stated before...it's either the cluster or VSS sensor.

For some people it's different...just a matter of which one you gonna try to fix first

Do you have any CEL's?

VSS gets my vote.
