d16y8!
its got pretty good room for improvment, and its vtec, pretty good engine for a sohc.
u could also look at the zc, dohc non vtec.
why u considering only single cam engines?

i say A6 or Z6, they can be tuned with good ecu, A6 can use ls rods, but for na street power, you would want VTEC, so Z6 would be your best choice.

just seeing what are my options for single slam engines...seems like everyone dogs the sohc, and goes dohc. Just preference for the underdog .

hey, you save almost 100lbs of weight. Parts are cheaper, you can beat B16's all day long.

D16Z6 with a few other parts from other SOHC engines plus aftermarket support is your best bet. Check out Spade's thread on "D-series upgrades". Search and you'll find it, about 11 pages on SOHC build ups...good stuff

youd really be surprised what a CHEAP *** set up like this would do:
- a decently light car
-d16a6 bottom, a1 pistons .50 oversized.
- any 88-95 sohc non vtec 16 valve head, ported n polished, milled .020.
-a 270 and + duration camshaft/gear with some good springs to handle to revs
-d16y8 96-00 sohc vtec intake manifold with GSR or H22 TB.
-cold air intake
-good 4-1 style header, and good flowing exhaust
-oem fly shaved to like 11.5 lbs (maybe no more then 12 to be safe) and a good clutch
-ZC tranny with Si final drive for cable cars
-hydro 92-00 sohc vtec tranny with zc 3rd and SRR 4.929 final
-reprogrammed teg/dx non vtec ecu with higher rev limit, + afc + TUNED or..HONDATA
this set up right here equates to a 11.8:1 compression non vtec sohc motor with a displacement of around 1611cc's due to the oversized pistons which are only around 34 a piece when u buy em online. and for the most part, all the parts are oem. this set up will do damage in the right car. and its damn cheap. and dont even get started on a carb conversion. this motor would LOVEEE carbs.

cuz beating other dohc with an sohc would feel better than vice versa..IMO

D16Y8 out of the box will make the most power. Most important of it's features over the rest is higher compression.

Woo hoo! No correct answer yet. That's a no-brainer...
