Default scrap the half-axle?

is it possible to NOT use an intermediate shaft/half-axle in a setup that normally uses one? got a 1st gen b16 sitting in my 94 sol si right now, almost ready to roll, but i hit the problem of axles today and panicked. however, i got an axle from a 91 civic (i believe that was the one) and it is the same length as my long-*** stock axle (d16 didn't use intermediate shaft) and it seems to fit the splines in the tranny just fine. the only problem is i would have to shave down my block a little bit on the backside to make room for the CV boot. the shaving part doesn't bother me because it doesn't have to go deep enough to worry. BUT i would just like to know if anyone has ever done anything like this, and if so....what was the outcome?

what exactly does the intermediate shaft do though?

could you not just run a longer axle, like the d16 uses?

this is all new to me, sorry for the stupid questions.
just need to know this stuff

you could always go to a drive shaft shop and tell them you need a custom long axle to replace the hlf shaft, you on you own as for explaining why,
the d series tranny axles will not work in the b16 tranny, just pull one off a DA integra, there are plenty in the junkyard where i live. or go get a remanufactured halfshaft from kragen/shucks/autozone/pepboys.
