Default Running rich?

Let me start by saying that I don't know alot about cars, I just got my '93 Si a few months ago (first car).

From what I can tell the car seems to be running a little rich, but I'm just guessing to the best of my knowledge. The car seems to be getting maybe 25 MPG, the exhaust smells pretty strong (but the lack of a cat might have something to do with that) and it seems to backfire a lot. I was told to check/replace my spark plugs first and see if that helps, but I don't know which spark plugs to get or what size socket I need to replace them. I don't have the manual or I would have checked that for the spark plug specs.

I haven't really done any maintenance on the car since I've had it and I'm not sure when the last time the previous owner did. Oil seems fine, but it wouldn't be a bad idea to change it. The engine has about 79k miles on it (D16Z6) and it had about 77k when I got it.

Any help or suggestions for a newb?

there's a specific size socket you need to get for your spark plugs.
and for the spark plugs themselves, just ask the place you're getting them at what kind to get. i'd say get NGK iridiums. but i don't know what specific kind you'd need.

where in IL are you? i can help you out with a lot of your car stuff. i got a shitload of tools and wouldn't mind giving you a hand.

Ok, I replaced the spark plugs with the help of my neighbor and he suggested changing the fuel filter, distributor cap and rotor as well as the ignition wires (w/e they are called). Is this a must-do thing, or can I slide without changing all that? How can I tell when/if they need to be changed. He also said I should do an oil change, which I plan on doing.

Once again, I'm not sure when the last time the previous owner did this stuff. My brother bought the car about a year ago, didn't use it a lot and had it sitting in the garage for months. Hence the 2k-ish miles in about a year.

whenever you first purchase a vehicle it would be ideal to get a tune up. Since you dont know the previous maintainace history its good to start fresh. Change your oil, oil filter, plugs, cap and rotor and fuel filter.
