Default Running rich, spark plug and octane

Alright here is a new question. I did not change the spark plugs 15,000 miles ago when i first got my car, my dad did. He doesnt remember what the gapped them to he thinks .040 so I thought its time to buy new ones. I also have been noticing black soot bluid up on my white bumper(so ugly).I know that it means I am running a little rich. I now know the stock gap is .044. I run 87 octane in my car, and I was thinking is there some way I could prevent that build up of soot by adjusting my spark plugs and/or changing octane I run in my car?

Stop driving around at WOT.
Just kidding.
Well your plugs could be fouled, causing your engine to run rich.
Pull your plugs and let us know what they look like and check the gap.
