You will have to pull the rods out to replace the bearings. You do not neccessarily have to pull the motor out of the bay to do so however.

You can see the crank/rods with the pan out, but I doubt you will be able to take the rods out without taking the head off.

everyone that i have talked to told me that i need to replace the crank when a bearing goes bad
is this true
or can i get away with just replacing the rod bearings

they are true. Anytime a bearing goes...99% of the time it ruins the surface of the crank. Putting new bearings in with a bad crank journal will just make the new bearing fail pre maturely.
You can however change rod bearings without pulling the head...just dropping the oil pan and being careful. However, if you did spin a rod bearing, etc, you'll need to pull the crank- pull engine, tranny, and main caps off...and get resurfaced or new crank
