Default replacing 96 d16y7 with 98 d16y8 longblock help.

my daily beater which i put 150 miles on 5 days a week, is an auto 96 lx d16y7 finally has a busted head gasket with 290k miles on the block and its overheating. my friend has his old 98 d16y8 longblock with 80k miles on it and im thinking of replacing the y7 with the y8. the y8 as been sitting in the garage for the past five years ,so, i have my fingers crossed that she will fire up fine. anys, let me move on.

now the y7 is an auto and the y8 is a manual with the manual pressure plate and flywheel still on the y8. ive swapped out bseries blocks before and they are mostly all manuals, so, this is my first attemp at an auto swap, not to mention a sohc swap. im assuming i can just pull the tranny off my auto y7 and reverse the installation from the y7 to the y8...............right?

now from my quick glancing at the two blocks, it looks like all the engine accessories will bolt up.............correct me if i am wrong

as far as wiring goes, i know i will have to get the ex ecu as the y8 is vtec and the y7 is non vtec. i know im going to have to run 2 separate wires for vtec pressure and solenoid, but will the engine harness from the y7 chassis be fine on the y8 longblock? am i missing any other wiring issues here?

also as far as injectors go, i know for sure the y7 are 190cc and the y8 is 240cc. think it would be ok to temporarily throw 190s on the y8 and retard the timing?

if im missing anything else on this swap, please let me know.

TIA sohc gurus.

you'll need to wire up the knock sensor too. Also unless you use your intake manifold from the Y7 you'll have to wire up a 2 wire IACV.

yes, ill be using the y7 IM. will there be any issues with the y7 oem header and cat bolting up to the y8? im hoping there isnt much difference between the two when it comes to the height of the head and shortblock.

also, will the dizzy from the y7 transfer over to the y8?

tia.

Oh man. you've got some work ahead of you.
Gad.. if i were you i'd just go through with a B swap and see if you could sell the D..

Y8 has a different throttle body and intakes are gonna be different. I think the manifold is different too.

Good luck!

its not that much work. personally i would just use the Y8 intake manifold and convert to a 2 wire IACV. The distributors should be identical. The exhaust manifold from the Y7 will work fine on the Y8
