I used vinyl tinting used to make a strip across the top of a windshield. It came in a strip about 8 inches wide dont know how long but enough to do a set of lights with some left over. I've had good luch with it. Put it on with water and cut it to the shape of your light and let it dry. It stays on real well. Ive had mine on for a year have taken car through car washes without any problems. Just have to take it off once and a while to clean

I bought a vinyl kit off ebay... Works good but still not sure if i like the look. Good news is you can take them off and put them on over and over no problem! So that way if you get pulled over you can just pull em off and make the cop happy.
Cost me $26 shipped best price ive found!

Re: (Pr0ject93hb)
I'd rethink doing this. If you ever get involved in an accident where brake lights could be an issue, your illegal modification of them is going to be a strong arguing point for the other side.

Re: (struppi)
Ok I took my chances toay, mostly due to boredum, to smoke my stock 97 tail lights. Since i just got my windows tinted totally dark i thought it would look nice to have red and smoked tail lights.
I used Tamiya Color "smoked" PS-31 model car spray paint. Worked like a charm. I'll be clear coating them over the weekend. 1 can = 5 bucks took care of both tail lights.
check out the results:
prepping
first coat around the corner
finished, and testing out my blinkers to make sure they are still bright, which there really was no difference between stock brightness and now because i did one light at a time and compared the brightness.
finished results
the paint

I talked to a police officer about the light thing. Painting your lights like mentioned is legal, putting a vinyl or those plastic covers on your tail lights is illegal. That's in Oregon, so check with your local authorities.
Find some old altezza's and paint them, that's what I did, no use ruining nice tail lights over it, so then you have the option of going back stock. God knows there are a lot of altezza's out there.

If anything, nowadays all I'd go with would be a light smoke on certain parts of the tail light. Totally blacked out tails aren't my style anymore.

I've never ever been a fan of smoked tail lights...but I must say your coupe looks pretty decent with the bottom part of the tails smoked.

Thanks I was actually very very worried that it would look like crap. I'm not even a fan. But i was just like "well if it looks bad i'll just remove the paint"
I wouldn't recommend smoking tailights unless you have your windows tinted, or have a black car, or else it would be a horrible contrast i think.

here is an image after about 4 coats of clear (notice the glossy madness, it was waaay too dull without the clear coat):
