Default a quick p0420 inquiry

I got this code a few months ago. Last night I reset the ecu by pulling the underhood radio fuse. I started the car and while cranking, the light when out, as soon as it turned over, the light came on. It did not flash a new code, or flash at all. Just stayed ON.

My random question is this, how many cat. converters does a d16y7 98lx civic have? I've read there may be 2 (one off the exhaust manifold, and one near the muffler).

I don't believe my cat. is dead because I don't spew ANY smoke of ANY color, and I still get 34-38mpg highway, with 300k on it. I'm really praying (for my budget's sake) that the code is being thrown by an o2 sensor.

If I do need to buy a new cat. converter, can anyone recommend a place that sells them for LESS then $350?!?! That just seems like an exorbitant price to pay.

I know this is a redundant subject, but thanks for reading and for any suggestions about this issue.

ok here is what u need to do. You need to hook up a acanner to determine if its really a o2 sensor or the cat is bad. that its the only way to truly determine which one is causung the code. just cuz your not seeing smoke and are getting decent mileage doesnt mean ur cat is still working. and u said u have 300k on her. the cat has lived a good life so be prepared to get a replacement.
