Default question about a v-tec civic motor

if the engine is a "v-tec" will it say"v-tec" on the valve cover every time,? The reason I ask is there is a guy telling me the motor in his car is a v-tec, but it does NOT say it. its a 2000 civic, its currently cut in half (parts car) . He claims its a v-tec but I'm not so sure, I only had about 2 minutes to check it out since I had to get going.

thanks

If it doesn't say vtec then its not a vtec engine. Every vtec motor that I have seen has had vtec stamped on it.

Then I guess you've never seen a D16Y8 motor before. They were under the hoods of all 96-00 civic ex's.

not true....a d16y8 has vtec but it doesn't say it on the valve cover...and that would be the engine that comes stock in your guys 2000 civic

It does NOT always say "VTEC" on the valve cover. A lot of VTEC engines came with valve covers that didn't "advertise" it.

Look for the VTEC solenoid on the back-left of the head. That's the easiest way to tell.
