Default is my motor vtec?

ok, i have a 97 ex coupe. I heard the motor is supposed to be vtec but on the valve cover it doesn't say vtec. I've worked on a lot of other cars at my job where the valve covers say vtec. thx for the help in adv.

just because it doesnt say vtec doesnt mean anything.
if it has the stock motor (or maybe a different d16y8) then it is vtec.

it should be. maybe if you run it hard with the windows down you can maybe hear it, but for sure your not going to feel it.

check the spark plug location, ive noticed that vtec heads have them closer to the front where non-vtec are on the fire wall side

yeah... i definately don't feel the vtec. that's why i asked if it was vtec. i was hoping it wasn't and it would explain my lack of speed. I've never been in a car this slow before. Makes me wanna do a swap immediately.

Yeah you won't feel it, if you have an exhaust or anything you can probably hear the tone change when VTEC engages. It only has an effect on the lift of the intake cams on SOHC motors, the exhaust cams never vary. so you never really get the full effect like you would in a DOHC

I am not real sure on the Y8 head, but it should have the Vtec solenoid on the back left side of the head.

Should be vtec unless someone changed the motor. My Si's valve cover didn't say vtec but it was a z6.

You don't need the valve to say vtec to actually have vtec

agreed... sohc vtec blows, the only way i can feel it in my cousins car (he has a 2000 civic ex), is to put the thing from drive4 down to drive2, and then hover the rpms just below 5500, the vtec engaging point, and then suddenly floor it, you can BARELY tell anything, but you can a little, if he had a short ram intake or cold air, then you could tell it because it would get louder, but hardly no pull at all. My dohc b16a pulls like a bitch, fuel pressure is bumped up to 50 psi... don't ask why its the only way it runs good, it needs to be tuned really bad, cold air intake

SOHC VTEC engines aren't as loud compared to the B-series engines and you don't really feel the "kick" either. You can boost the motor and put out more power than a stock B-series .
