Question about Small chips in Pistons PICS HELP
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I am looking into buying a prebuilt motor. Its a d16z6 w/ the basic build, eagle h-beams, cp pistons .020 over, arp studs, new bearings, ya know how it goes... I told the seller to pull the head so i can get a picture of the pistons... well heres the delema... 2 of the pistons have small chips in them. the pics are ok but could be better... take a look and c if this is goin to be worth my time... can i purchase 2 pistons or use this setup... idk exactally what to do but its at a pretty good price so what are my options (replace just the 2 and hone it, run what it is, dont buy it at all, or if anybody has a odball set of 2 pistons i am interested as u can c...) Thanks for your help... Mitch

Re: Question about Small chips in Pistons PICS HELP (SinglecamMitch)
looks like someone maybe had valve clearance issues? im sure it will run and not affect it in the long run. sand the edges of the chips smooth.

im pretty sure they were ran boosted... on a fmu... but if you think i can get away with sandin em then that would be great... i guess the walls are all fine with NO SCRATCHES!! so if there is any more input on what to do that would be great... Thanks agian Mitch

im pretty sure you cant just buy 2 pistons. most likely they will need to be rehoned out. so that means you have to go like a .5 over bore piston for a nice tight fit.

It is hard to see the spots in the photos but it does look like detonation.

if it was just detination then they should be "useable" right... im running crome and will have it retuned to my setup... this could have been caused by using a fmu right?

yes , at high revs , couldve been starved of fuel. im sure they will be fine as long as the sides arent scuffed. not good for sure , but it doesnt look that bad from the pics.

Re: (SinglecamMitch)
I would say it was detonation that chipped those pistons in those places. That's not the end of the world, it's just an explaination as to how they ended up looking that way. Did you have a chance to do a compression check on that engine before the head was removed? That would have given you a better idea as to whether the damage was superficial or affecting the cylinder bore seal. If the cylinder bores are in good shape and you want the extra piece of mind while the engine is apart, I would have all the cylinders re-honed and install new pistons and rings (you do NOT have to have the cylinders bored before hand). If compression was good before the head was removed and you don't plan on running boost or nitrous, I'd probably just leave everything the way it is and make sure it's properly tuned when finished.

well im deffenitaly running boost on these bad boys and im 99.9999% sure that its a result of detination... so i think ill try to run the pistons as is and c how things go...
