question about shaving side moldings
i am getting a new paint job real soon and wanted to get my side moldings shaved. i dont want them filled in but i want the molding off and the holes filled in. is there a good way to do this. has anyone done it themselves? i brought it to my friends body shop and they said that its tough cuz you slam the doors and it might break off. Ive seen it done plenty of times on this board. i did a search and nothing came up about taking the moldings out and filling in the holes. can anyone help.

you probably want to weld in the holes so that it doesn't fall off easily, i've seen it done with fiberglass and bondo, and that stuff, cracks and falls off if you close the door too hard.

i was told that it could be welded but they also said it might warp the door a little. they wont do it unless they know its gonna come out perfect they said.

It has to be done with sheet metal that's welded in and then bondo or fiberglass to fill the very small areas left over. It cannot just be filled with bondo because of the likelyhood that it'll crack or 'fall off'.
Try the appearance forum, I'm sure a lot of them will have input on this.

It's pretty hard to do it that way because if you weld it, it will warp your panels. Even just tack welding it. These thin sheetmetals that our cars are made out of is just too hard to work with.
Ask a shop if they can use metal bonding adhesive instead. this stuff is rated stronger than welding but Ive never used it before. I chose to weld my moldings and door handles instead, but it warped the fuc out of my panels.
I still have the adhesive which costed me $30-40 from my autobody supply shop. This stuff is expensive.
