Default Port and Polish worth it for a d16Z6?

My setup:
Z6 head on A6 block, rewired to OBD1 to use the P28 electronic, intake,
headers(z6), straight pipe(soon to be installed), stock exhaust, a
VTEC controller, and a cam gear. The bottom end is all stock, and only
has 85k on it. Compression is 200 psi across all 4 cylinders.

My question is, do these heads respond well to head porting? Should I get
a full port and polish job and a 5-angle job valve? Or just a mild port
job? My plan is to also replace the cam with a ZEX unit when I'm having
the head done. My goal for the car is to be a reliable daily driver that
makes 150hp at the flywheel with out FI.

Thanks for the help!

a good daily driven all-motor sohc can put 160whp to the wheels with lots of money... now, a gsr motor w/ bolt ons can achieve that same horsepower, is more tunable, and costs less.

Did you even read my post? I'm not going to do a swap. I'm not going to spend the cash for a GSR motor, plus mounts. This is for a 89 CRX, so there are other issues with the GSR swap.

I am not interested in building the bottom end. My question is simple, please reread my post if you must.

that plan of yours sounds very good,
i had a fixed up d16z6 before and it was pretty cool, it was pretty quick w/bolt-ons, i think your **** will be alot faster after the port/polished head and all that headwork,
get the full p/p and the zex cam.

one more thing you should do after that is get your ecu reprogrammed, get a cam sprocket, fpr, then get it dyno tuned.
all that would be around $600 but it would be worth it cause youll get a very big hp gain.

hope this helps

Wususp NoahK,
I have cleaned up/port& polished a bunch of sohc VTEC heads and fitted them with cam, cam gear and upgraded retainers and valve springs. Most were put in 92-95 H/bs but I’d like to see one on a mini-me setup.
Let me know if you need some guidance on your buildup. I have my self a daily driven 13sec all headwork motor in a crx(stock clutch too!). I have been working with these motors for the past 5 years. I personally don’t like Gude stuff, because they are old technology. I talk to Bill G himself once in a while and he is still stuck in 1997. He hasn’t changed anything since they came out with those cams. I doubt he is continuing R&D on his stuff.
Zex cams are pretty good but the disadvantage is the price. I use JG Engine dynamics cams since day one and I have the numbers to prove it. 138hp to the wheels with 117 lbs of torque(stock is like 96hp to the wheels). That’s more torque than a stock b16. b16 torques are only like 104-109lbs.
I understand the different budgets of different people. And there is a combination of parts out there to fit your needs and how much you want to spend.

I’m currently working with engine builders right now to do a 10/11 sec all motor SOHC fuel injected race car CRX. Hopefully it will be out by end of the year(wedding in summer will kinda slow me down for awhile).
Anyways, hit me up if you need help or just have some quick questions.

Good luck!

Your car made 200 on the compression test... Uh oh, i guess I better take my head off and get some valve guides.

Remember that my car has at compression ratio of around 10.5:1(a6 pistons). If yours is D16z6 your figures will be lower.
