Please help with shifter problem
I have search everywhere for this issue and found nothing similar.

So the other day I was on a road trip with the wife and kids. We had to stop, and when we go to leave, the wife cannot put the car into gear. (automatic). I say " take your foot off the brake" and she does, and it starts to reverse. So the car is stuck in reverse and wont go into any other gear. She noticed that the shifter has been acting up, and now its pooched 3 hours from home. I squeeze under her car to notice that the shifter cable is hanging out about 4 inches from where it should be. So I grab it and push the cable back into the tranny and hold it there, and tell the woman to shift....It shifts. But if I am not holding it, when she shift from park, it pulls the cable out again.
So my question is, what is supposed to be holding this cable in position against the transmission? Or from falling out. I took the housing off that " protects" it from dirt to see what is going on in there...and I cannot see anything out of place. Though I do notice that there is a grove in the housing and nothing to fill it.

My problem is its getting pulled out when moving shifter.
Please any input here is appreciated. Thank you

#19 keeps coming out of the transmission. Where the "flange" sits against the tranny. When shifted it backs out and get jammed up in the out position, and stuck in reverse is where it sits. Unless I reach under there and manually place the "flange" back where it is suppose to sit.
I want to know if some has had this problem before. And if a new cable fixes the problem? Cause the system looks intact, and yet I am unsure what is supposed to hold it in place against the tranny.

No its not fixed yet RonJ@HT.
I am still unsure whats happening to the shift cable. In your picture "16", where it has the wording "shift cable" with a leader arrow to the cable. Where the arrow is pointing at the cable is the part thats slipping out. What is holding it in?

Can anyone tell me what holds the cable up against the transmission?
Where there is groves in the shift cable cover...does that hold it? Is there a o-ring that holds it in place? Even a lock pin of some sorts? Besides it being connected the the lever, what holds the actual assembly in place when running through the gears. The grooves.....

Re: Please help with shifter problem
Either way. Ebay has one w warranty for 60 shipped. Just dont want to spend if its a easy fix. Cause if I hold the cable against the tranny, the wife can shift perfectly. If I let go, it falls out when shifting and wont go back in and jams in reverse. "the shift cable" exactly where the arrow points in RonJ second picture.
