Default 99 Civic shifter cable question

When shifting into reverse and park I have trouble but others are ok.
I've asked a few people about what exactly it would be but they're not sure if it's the tranny or the cable.

Any idea how much $ this might cost?
I'm in Massachusetts.

Thank You!

What do you mean by "have troubles"?
You cant move the shifter into position?
or
The shifter goes into position, but the car does not go into gear?

It's hard to put into Neutral and finally it goes into Reverse but I have to always go into Neutral before Reverse.

Not sure why, hopefully I can get out of this for less than a transmission!
I heard they're about $2700. Yikes.
Any ideas about it might be would be awesome.

I would get under the car and remove the shift cable from the transmission.
Then see if its still hard to move the shifter.
If it is, then its probably a cable or shift assembly problem.
If not, most likely a tranny problem.

Ok full story-

When you shift from park into reverse, the car used to slide right into reverse, and stop in the detent for it; the dash indicator light would show you were in reverse, and the car would back up (so, totally normal). Now, when you shift to reverse, it feels like it clicks into the detent and into reverse, but you are actually in between park and reverse, the dash lights show you are not in any gear, and it doesn't back up- it's like a second neutral. When in gear, the car is fine- no odd noises, no change in how it shifts, and none of the other gears have this "dead" spot.

We pulled the whole shifter assembly apart and verified the indicator switch isn't hanging the shifting up, verified that the shift interlock solenoid seems to be functioning properly, and that nothing is gumming up or sticking the assembly from shifting. We adjusted the cable for kicks, and all we succeeded in doing is changing the position of where it would stop in between park and reverse by a small bit (it stops about 1/4" from actually being in reverse).

I'll try removing the cable from the tranny like was suggested. What I don't know is, if I remove the tranny cable, will the fluid pour out all over me . I don't want to find out the hard way

Thanks for all the help so far!

Ok, I though the shifter itself was not going into position.

If that isnt the case, then I wount worry about removing the shifter cable from the tranny.

There is, however, a way to "reset" your shift cable.
Its been a couple years since I've done it, so I cannot remember exactly how its done.

If you remove the center counsel, and put the shifter into the "N" position(If I remember right), then loosen the cables, there should be a hole(near the base of the shifter assembly) that you stick a large pin(or punch) in to line cable back up perfectly. Then tighten the cable back down and remove the pin/punch.

Sorry its not a good description, but I cannot remember all the details.

It sounds like your shifter cable is fucked up. That "second neutral" you're referring to sounds like the car's getting stuck between gears. Remove the cable on the tranny side and see if it's still ******* up.
