Default overheating civic. 1986

My wagon has started to over heat. We have replaced the thermostat, the water pump seems to be fine (it is not gushing water) the rad is a new one. We found out that the one hose to the heating coil was warm the other cold. This would seem to me that there is a blockage in the heating coil. We by passed that so that the coolant (water right now) would circulate without going into the heating coil. The temp gauge reads really hot. The fan is hard wired in so it runs when ever the car is started. Any ideas?
