Put some Hondabond around the spark plug O-ring gaskets (that you put onto the valve cover). It'll help it seal since it sounds like yours are old and not sealing properly. Either that or go and buy 4 new O-ring gaskets.

When you say you "changed the gasket on the valve cover" are your changing the spark plug grommets as well? If so, try what Newman said with the Hondabond or RTV.

Re: oil in spark plug holes... (Newman)
go buy 4 new ones. spark plug gasket rings
i went to check my spark plugs recently and the threads had oil all in it. the inner nuts on my valve cover were way loose. i think i burned a quart of oil almost in my spark plugs

Start from the inside bolts, and work your way outward.

Tighten the bolts in this sequence
7______________5
....3_________1
....4_________2
8______________6
1-4 spark plug cover nuts and 5-8 are valve cover nuts if my attempt at an illustration does not make sense
