OEM fog light harness smoking?
the other day while driving my OEM fog light harness started to smoke, some of the wires are melted a little. What would cause this? It's ALL OEM, and it still has the factory bulbs in it, they were never changed...

There has to be a short somewhere. it had to have grounded out. i surprised it didnt blow a fuse, i mean thats what they are for.

i agree. make sure your fog light fuse is a 15amp. and make sure the #2 and #5 slots use the correct fuses also.. (cant remember what they are off hand)

Did u read his post?
Its all OEM he dident wire anything,
And what would a relay do? nothing in this case.
---------My advice-----------
Check for a short somewhere and try replace the current fuses with a LOWER rated one, it should blow out quicker if the current ones arent blowing.
If theres a way to see how much current is being drawn by your lights it may help you but more then likely its a slow short which is causing the wires to over heat and slowly melt but as for the fuses they should of melted thats whats got me thinking, pull them once to be sure the circuit truely goes off to make sure your not shorting to a positive source and not ground.
If your shorting to a positive source your fuse wont blow because its getting the currant from somewhere else it shouldent be hence why the fuse isent blowing. but it still dosent explain why it would over heat and melt unless theres more to the proplem your not aware of.
But hopefully this will help you and give you a place to start. Wiring is a pain in the *** to trouble shoot if you dont have the diagram on how it should be. Id pick up a helms manual if you dont already have one for a refference...
Sometimes the factory wiring just isent big enough to do the job its intended to, i would look at replacing the melted wires if there in bad shape (More then just jacket discoloration) check the jackets for holes that may explain the short if any...

Re:
from my experience i would have to say that it would be a definate spike in amperage that overloaded the wiring. check your **** with a ammeter, dont forget to wire the meter in series w/ the circuit or youll kill the multimeter!

Meh thats a valid point but if its Oem it should of been put in how the factory would of done, thats the whole point of buying oem parts. But none the less it can easily of been put in wrong. But to my knowledge most cars have the wiring for most if not all the options already installed but just not ussed due to the fact its easier to make one harness for every car that way its easy for the dealership to add options the customer might want and over charge them.

i appreciate your guys opinions, once we get another warm day here i'm going to track all the wiring.... they are honda oem fogs and installed with all oem harness', they are plugged into the factory wiring that was already there for the fog lights.
