Default Odd A/C Problem.

Alright so the car is a all stock untouched 95 civic DX. The a/c would work fine at times, but the compressor would kick off after a little ways of driving and blow warm again. I hooked up a vacuum manifold gauge set and it seemed the pressures were on the low side. Vacuumed the system completely, held a good -28 vacuum for over 30 minutes, recharged the system to about (IIRC) 40 PSI low / 200 high is what it was in the end.

At the moment, the a/c still intermediately works. If you press in the a/c button and turn the fan to any number, the compressor clutch will not engage, however the idle will increase and the condensor fan will run. Ive tryed jumping the low pressure switch since i know the pressures are ok to see if it would make the clutch engage, but no help there. The weird thing is, if you slide the fan switch to 4, if you slide it back to off, when it hits the number 1 spot it will kick on for just a second as you slide it off, basically like the climate control is possibly bad. However at times, you can just turn it on like normal and the compressor engages like normal, but does the same thing it did before i tryed the recharge, cuts out after a ways of driving and will randomly kick back on if left on etc etc. It blows very cold after the recharge (when it does work) it just wont stay that way for more than 5 minutes at any given time.

It may just be me, but it seems the problem worsens the hotter it is outside as well.

Would a bad / needing resoldered climate control make the compressor just intermediately cut in and out while driving though? Seems unlikely, so im here for possible input before I buy anything else.

Thanks in advance.

Check your compressor clutch gap.

Does the condenser fan still run when the compressor clutch disengages or does it also stop running?

It did run whether the compressor engaged or not.

However, the issue is solved. The clutch gap was at .035 and the limits IIRC was .014 - .026. Removed the shim to get almost a perfect .014 and it works everytime now, have used it 3 days without it cutting off once.

Thanks guys.

Glad it worked out for you. I don't know if this is common or not but after I pulled a shim out to bring mine back in spec the clutch bearing started making noise about 15,000 miles later. AC still worked but the noise was annoying.
