Which OBD to get...
Im about to purchase a GSR swap for my 96ex. Im not too familiar with the OBDI/OBDII so hopefully you could shed some light.
This will be my daily driver and I plan to gradually make upgrades with some bolt-ons and eventually go the FI route.
Will I have any restrictions if I go OBDII? Ive read on here that I wont be able to go Hondata etc with an OBDII swap. WIll I be restricted when it comes to the other upgrades I want to make?
Im having a shop do the swap, will they run into problems putting an OBDI swap in there and will I have to make extra payout for anything?
I just dont know which motor will be the wise choice.
Thats all I can think of for now...thanks in advance.

you can get a conversion harness to convert obdII to obd I to run hondata/uberdata/whatever and it's plug and play but being that the upgrades will come later it will probably just be easier to install the OBDII now. Besides the OBDII engines usually have less mileage.

So youre saying down the road when I become more educated with everything I can get the conversion harness to run hondata etc on my OBDII? If im hearing you right, good news.

yes, but that doesn't mean he can put an obd1 gsr motor/harness into an obd2 chassis.

you can use either obd1 or obd2 motor... you just cant use an obd1 motor and run an obd2 ecu without having trouble...
if you buy an jumper harness and an ecu.. you are pretty much done with the conversion.. just need to switch some plugs that has to be changed anyways, and the shop should take care of that..
i did it the easy for the long run.. i knew i was going hondata and other stuff too.. so yeah...
but OBD1 is less of a bitch.. less sensor = easier life!

can someone clarify this for me/him, when buying a obd2 motor for his 96 Civic, he wants to try and find another obd2a motor if possible to make this wiring easier? I know thats the case for b16 swaps into ek but not sure if that is the same with the b18's. maybe a dumb question but i figure we clarify that enough for someone looking into spending that coin.

i'm trying think of any plugs and what not you need to change on the engine harness but i can think of any..... i guess it just depends on what injectors, alternator, and distributor you're running...
like i said you can run an OBD2 motor with an OBD1 ecu but not the other way around without trouble... hope that helps a lil
in other words.. i wouldnt spend an extra few hundred to get a obd2 motor.. obd2 might mean less miles.... that doesnt mean the motor wasnt beaten to hell...
i rahter have a motor with 100k that i was highway driven then a 50k motor that was raced and used for stop and go driving everyday...

ok, here's what you SHOULD do. find an obd2a b18c1 (96-98) and retain your stock engine harness, and just repin and add all the necessary wires like vtec, knock sensor, iabs, etc. run the obd2a p72 for now until you upgrade to hondata/uberdata etc. then from there you find an obd1 ecu and buy an obd2a-obd1 conversion harness. no need to find an obd1 gsr swap since it won't even be a legal swap anyways.

the main reason OBD1 is easier is because of TIMING. timing cannot be adjusted on OBD2 motors. if you try to advance or retard timing on your dizzy on an OBD2 motor, the ECU will automatically adjust the fuel and air ratio to correct specifications.
