Default not your average charging problem

So last night i was driving out of no where my lights start dimming, not the usual dim rev it up they get brighter, they just start fading out. then the RPM gauge goes, then the car starts to spit and sputter then dies.

so thinking alternator, i buy a new one, get the old one out, test it on a bench tester at oreillys and it test out good, new one does as well, put the old one back it, same problem, put the new one in, same thing, the car runs fine, and dosnt die out battery light isnt on, but the alt, new and old is only showing 12.4 volts or less depending on what i have on or off.

my question is, does this sound like a short somewhere in the wiring, or the electronic load detector, or what?

i have never had to experince anything like this before....

any help would be awesome!
