Default no vtec in the eg?

posting this for a friend who drives an eg w/ d16. basically one day his vtec stopped working now. when he runs it up to/past x-over there is nothing, the engine doesnt cut off, no cel's, no nothing. and we cant figure out why. his car does have vtec though i have seen it/heard it and it has a vtec valve cover(not like that means anything though). what could it be? and oh yah its a '95 ex 5spd just in case you need to know. thanks guys!

p.s.: do the cel bulbs or any other for that matter ever burn out? because maybe has a cel on and doesnt know it...

Yes that model year has a vtec D16z6.....and you should make sure the cel light still works. Weird.

Could be low oil preasure, or bad vtec solenoid.

sohc vtec engines have an almost non noticable vtec x-over. does the cars power fall off really bad just after 5k or does it still pull till just before redline?

if its pulling to redline i would not worry about it at all.

-check oil level
-make sure solenoid is still good
-make sure oil pan isnt dented (found out that was the cause to my B16 not hitting)

I think their is a thread floating around on what to check for if vtec is activating, ill see if i can find it.

EDIT: found it...

For the record...and you can come and witness it for yourself. My D16z6 pulls harder (notice-able) and gets ******* LOUD at 5grand. No cams, no timing adjustments. Intake, exhaust, unorthodox racing crank pulley, and AEM cam gear set to zero.
EDIT: If I had a digital video camera I would take a vid. I am no ricer...this thing gets moving after 5000...I have beat my friends Mitsu GT eclipse and he runs 15.2 in the quarter.

sometimes you can and sometimes you cant. ive had a sohc vtec that ran great but the vtec x-over was silent. yes it worked, i know for a fact it was working properly. it had i/h/test pipe/e/ ur pulley and cam gear.

then a friend of mine has one with just a short ram and it has a loud vtec x-over.

ive driven three others that were very quiet, one you could barely hear and the other two were silent just like my old one was. its wierd, some you can hear like a dohc vtec and some sound like a non vtec.

well he does have a short ram and we still cant hear it, so what rpm does vtec engage on that engine (sorry im an H22 guy), and couldnt we hook up a vtec light or sumthing to make sure that its trying to engage and how do you make one of these?

*edit*: how can i check to see if the solenoid is still good? what should i look for?

the lobes switch at about 4800 or so. like i said before, you might not be able to hear it and it might be working fine. if the power does not fall off big time by 5500, you are fine. the small lobe on the sohc vtecs only makes power till right about 5k then falls off.

if its not throing a CEL i cant see anything being wrong with it. anything in the vtec system will throw a code if it isnt working.
