Default no power when taking off

Guys I have a 98 civic ex and when I take off in the morning in first gear the car just falls on its face . It runs fine when just sitting and reving it. If I let it warm up for awhile the problem goes away.
Any ideas?

The most common cause of this is an intake manifold vacuum leak. You can check for this by testing the MAP sensor signal voltage and/or by spraying starting fluid on the leak. If you spray starting fluid on an IM vacuum leak, it will change the idle, usually causing it to rev up a little. Another possibility would be a bad or dirty FITV.

First thing I would check is timing if it was a vac problem normally it would surge at idle but would run fine as soon as you gave it any gas at all

Do you have an automatic or manual transmission? If you don't find any vac leaks and you have an automatic, you might have a transmission issue. It seems like it should throw a code if the problem is in the a/t, though.
