I would take axle out and try re-installing it.

No hitting the axle with a hammer. Ever. Take it all the way apart (suspension too if it's required) and do it all over. Trust me, the annoyance of a repeat install is better than stripping the splines off an improperly installed CV shaft .

Pull it out and just push it back in until it goes all the way in. What kinda condition is the little snap ring in on the end of the axle ?

wiggle and push, wiggle and push and twist until that bastage buddies up to the case . It's always an annoyance, but it's one of the most important parts and that's why I insist on doing the axles on every swap I've ever helped with. No pop-outs yet .

Get a 2x4 piece of wood, and tap the cv joint in until it snaps right in. Do not use a hammer on the CV joint, and I do not recommend hitting it directly on the other end.

You shouldn't need a hammer. Just take the suspension apart again and take the axle all the way out, then put it back in. Grab the joint that goes into the tranny with your hands and just keep pushing on it. It will take some force, but you should know when it is in. If you aren't sure try pulling it out and if you can get it out without a pry bar, then it isn't in all the way.
