Need a replacement motor for a 2000 Civic EX... Which one?
Details:
Just found a decent deal on a 2000 Civic EX (automatic.) Body is in great shape, however, the motor is starting to develop a slight knock to it. ~150k on the body, and the guy only wants $450 for it. It starts up and drives at the moment, and runs great except for the slight knocking.
Obviously, I want to source a replacement motor for it before I purchase the car. This is pretty much my first step outside of the OBD-1 world, so what works and doesn't is not really my forte. Im in N.Y. so I know if I replace the motor, I have to use a 2000 or newer engine. However, based on the fact that I have a family member in the inspection business, I know that as long as I can get the ECU to read clearly for inspection, I can have an older engine in there and "pass" his "visual inspection."
So, Im looking to my Honda brethren for a little help as to what will work as a direct replacement, and where I can get one online if I cant find any locally. OR, what might be able to work from other years with a little wiring fun.
This will be a daily driver, so I am not looking for any "Convert it to manual and swap XXX motor into it," style info. Strictly daily driving and longevity/reliability for this one my friends.
Thanks in advance!

^ y8 came in ex civics...
Id say forget jdm swaps....just source a low mileage y8 motor off craigslist/ebay/junkyard...
for 2-400 your looking at a running civic that you have 800 total in. takes 6-8 hours to pull a y8 and drop a different one in...

I plan on staying as close to 100% stock replacement as possible. Jdm swaps are not even on my mind.
Not worried about the physical swap, done plenty in my days. Main concern is just what to do if I can't find a y8 locally, and what electrical tricks might be needed to do if it is my last resort (example: only being able to find a motor from a 97 EX.) Because there are a bunch available locally from 96-98 EX's, but none so far from a 99-00.

you shouldn't have a problem running a y8 out of a 96-98 as far as i know. both D16Y8. From the research ive done on them, the Y8 is a very reliable motor. I would personally just stick with that for a daily. Good gas mileage and enough power. My Y7 coupe is actually very fun to drive and has 240,000 miles with no problems.

96-98 ex motors are the same internally, just some little differences on the outside of it pertaining to the intake manifold and injectors. (99-00 had air injection to help it warm up faster). you can swap it over from the 99-00 motor.

I'm definitely going with a Y8. I am just wondering if I picked one up from a 96-98, will it prevent me from passing inspection or anything like that? I know they are physically pretty much the same motor, just need to know what motors will work hassle free for inspection/emissions.

Just out of curiosity, what would it take to get a Japanese motor to pass emissions/inspection here in N.Y.? HMO's prices (and mileage,) are so tempting, yet they do not carry any USDM Y8's. Would a D15B or a ZC work?

im also a ny'er....ive never had a problem getting a jdm motor passed. make sure your wired correctly pref obd2...and all emission hooked up....and no one will even look it over. They are supposed to hook you up to a machine....that links up to albany...and it checks the emissions for your car. Ive never had anyone check engine codes or do any digging. No CEL's...and your good.

It's an automatic. I do have an extra 5spd pedal setup laying around, but I am not converting this thing in order to do a swap, like I said this is a daily driver, keeping it 100% stock and reliable.
I found a motor from a 2000 LX locally, do those have the Y8?

WOW, really? How many times has it been stated on this site that an auto B series swap into a Civic is a lot of work, a big headache, and not financially worth it. This isnt that hard to understand is it?

This! ^^^
I also already stated that I am not looking for any real "performance gaining" swap, just looking for a stock replacement so I can get the most out of the car (reliability and longevity wise,) as I can.
I found a Y7 motor locally from a 2000 LX. 132K on the clock, and I get the motor, transmission, wiring harness, and ECU for $350. Going to check it out in the morning. Figure for now it would be good because (and correct me if I am wrong here,) I can swap motors, and just use the LX ECU and be good to go, and if I need the harness it is included, and I will have a back up transmission. Then I could also either A.) Swap on the Y8 head. or B.) Re-build the Y8 block to stock specs, and have a fresh block then put that back in and sell the Y7 motor to get some money back.
