need help with coolant leak
i have a 92 civic swap in a d16z6 motor. i noticed that there have been coolant leaking around the oil pan by the crank pulley. looking from the top and bottom i couldn't see where the coolant is coming from. could it possibly be from the water pump?

the motor was in the process of being assembled together. didn't know that the water pump was bad. yeah it sucks, but can't do anything about it until i replace it. was wondering how bad is it to drive around with a leak like that? what damage it will cause internally?

None..
Until you run out of coolant or one part of the engine doesn't get cooled properly, then you're gonna have a major effing problem.
It's with the timing belt, they go hand in hand. It's just about vitally important for your engine for you to replace the water pump (and with that, the TB and tensioner).

Re: need help with coolant leak (Syndacate)
That's good to hear. Hopefully when the car is finally done, I can bring it to an auto shop for them to replace the timing belt and water pump. Thanks.

i don;t see it hurting your motor in the short term.. could shorten belt life.
good luck.
i take it for granted being able to do my own motor work.
even when i was a noob always had friends that can do it.
not everyone has this

most of my friends don't have any experience with cars and the ones that do, they are all gone to college. oh well, worst case scenario is screwing up the motor. since sohc motors are somewhat inexpensive, shouldn't be bad to get another one.

Re: need help with coolant leak (EGnewbie)
I'm in the same boat as you. I was out playing in the little bit of snow we got here on Sunday and then Monday I started my car and had a surging idle so I was like "hmmm wtf" so I looked it up and sure enough it's a FITV problem probably caused by not getting coolant. So now last night I was driving to Sheetz and the damn thing was nearly in the red on the thermo and I was getting cold air from the blower. I looked at it today in the light and saw coolant spilling out by my crank pulley, my pump just went out too. Since I'm at college I won't get to fix it till next weekend, but I've been driving around for a while I reckon on low to no coolant. Getting home an hour away will be an adventure. Think I could get away by dumping tons of coolant in and trying to get home up the highway, then dumping more in when it says it's heating?

Re: need help with coolant leak (DanW)
i poured coolant into my radiator and resevoir tank to full, but the coolant goes down even when i don't drive the car. best thing to do is to fix that water pump to prevent any coolant from coming out.
