Default need help. big short shifter PROBLEM. searched

i was trying to put my short shifter in and i got the shift linkage off and i was trying to undo the last 2 bolts that hold the shifter ball area and as i was undoing them they just started to keep spinning. i felt the back of that screw to see if i could out something there to stop it from spinning but it is just flat and really hard to get to. what do i do??

Is it the bearing that is out? You should only have to remove three bolts. two of them which are on the shift linkage bracket, which are 12mm bolts I believe. And one bolt that holds the shifter to the rod shifter.

i got the bolt out that holds the shifter to the rod shifter...so now the rod is dangling down and i was working on the last 2 that are on that bracket. as i start to undo those, they just spin, like i am suppose to be holding them on the other side, but the other side is flat and i cant really get to it...

They have to catch thread that holds it to the chassis. They should catch in.

I had the same problem also. Save yourself time in the future and get your self some good quality nuts/bolts and washers to replace them. I ended up taking mine right out from under the car and cutting the bolts off with a dremel cut-off wheel. You could also use a pair of vise grips and lock onto the round portion above, or jami it somehow.

just undo the complete shift linkage from your tranny and car and work with it out from under the car then you will be able to hold the flattened ended bolts with vicegrips or a pair of pliers.

The If you mean the nuts that come off the bolts that hold the "change ball retainer" plate on then they are squared off at the base... you need to apply pressure on them to get the nut off... It (the change ball holder/retainer) is #9 in the illustration linked...

just get some plyers and have a friend hold that upper side of the bolt. that's what I always do.
