NEED ASSISTANCE ASAP
my 98 civic ex after i hit about 3500 rpms starts making a crucial knocking sound and i have no idea what it could be!!! this all started after i installed a VTEC controller and set it to 4k (dumbass idea) i have unplugged it and its still doing it! i thought it was an oil problem so i put half a quart of oil in it to see if it would make a diffrence, but it didn't. so if any one could help me PLEASE DO

Find the source of the noise. And make sure the nut where you adjust your valve lash is tight and that your valve lash is within spec.

i dunno if ur engine is high compression but if it is, u shouldn't use less than 91 octane gas or your engine will start knocking. Cuz knocking can occur from that. i dunno about the Vtec controller though causing the knocking.

you should have read about them before installing them...there is so much info on here.. about how useless they are.. unless your a turboed, even then..

d16y8, sounds like its coming from the head, had a neighbor listen to it and he said something about it being my camshaft? i thought it was one of my valves but my neighbor assured me that if it was one of my valves my exhaust would have some sort of suction

Re: (xodyss)
when i used to have my 97 hatch witha d16 like ur but w/out VTEC, i would hear a knockin noise from my car but that was only on a cold engine. Is it more of a clicking sound?? or like a heavy knocking?? Id say u threw off u valves outta place a little but not sure. Does the car and everything run fine like drives normally?

Re: (JSpeK_EM1)
yeah until about 3500 rpm, the knock is pretty crucial, if you heard a car that needs oil bad thats what it sounds like but only after 3.5k

Re: (xodyss)
I don't know if a knocking valve would cause some sort of suction through your exhaust but Im sure if its comming from the head it could be alot more than just valves, my advise is either take apart the head and take a look inside and see if you can diagnose the problem, or take it to a shop and have them remove the valve cover and see if they can see anything just by doing that, if not, then they are going to have remove the entire head and possibly take it apart. Just my .02

Re: (Slick_99)
take out each of ur spark plugs, shine a light down and look on top of ur piston if possible, check to see for damage on the piston top, cuz if u do, u might have snapped ur timing belt and ur valves are hitting ur pistons. How many miles is on ur car?? If theres o damage their, try popping off ur valve cover and check for damage, make sure to use honda bond when puttin ur valve cover back, can get from honda. the only other thing is mayb u threw a rod bearing. O yea, u never answered me on this is ur oil level good?

could it be possible that from me setting the VTEC to low the compression in the engine could have bent the valves?
