So my car makes this ticking noise when idling. It's not there all the time. It ticks for a few seconds then it stops for a bit then it ticks again. It seems to be coming from the engine. I did a valve adjustment today and it still does it. Anyone know what it could be?

 

What set up and what mods?

Try to listen around the engine bay to see where the ticking is coming from as well.

 

B16a with i/h/e - seems to be coming fron the front of the engine

 

check your oil level

 

adjust your valves that can caue the noise...

Sounds like Lost Motion Assemblies. They (8) sit under the vtec rocker arms and keep them from ticking when vtec is not engaged.

This also sounds like it. Also make sure the cam gear bolt is torque'd properly.

 

Check out you distruibuter that may be it because i know mine does it!

 

I agree with Golden, sounds like the LMA's

 

So do they basically need replacing? (Sorry I'm kinda of a noob to this engine stuff..)

yes. they aren't very expensive. LMA hold the VTEC cam lobe when you are not in VTEC so it's not 'flopping' around basically.

 

How do I find out which ones are bad? Or if it even is them that are causing the noise?

 

Put your motor at TDC for cylinder 1, take off your valve cover and push down on the vtec rocker arms above cylinder 1. They should spring back up with no problem. Then TDC for cyl. 2 and check those, TDC 3, etc. Also if the ticking quits when vtec is engaged it's probably the LMA's. If you buy new ones you mght as well go ahead and by ITR LMA's.
