Could be the VSS sensor, bad wiring, or the speedo head in the guage cluster. A bad VSS or wiring should throw a CEL. Do you have another cluster or VSS that you could swap in to test?

If you have cruise control, thats a good way to check if your speed sensor is bad or not. My speedo wasn't working when I got my car, but it would work after I'd run the heater for a while so I figured it was a bad solder joint. I pulled the cluster and re-soldered the speedo board and it's been working great ever since... I don't know if this helps, but you might try it. only takes like 10 minutes and can save you some money if it works.

Re: (JohnnySpade)
i changed the gauge and it still doesnt work. everything else works in the gauge cluster except the speedo. and a check engine light does come on about 30 sec to a minute after driving, but i thought it was cause it has a swapped v-tech single in it.

Re: (JDM Dylan)
take out your vss clean the prongs inside it with alchohol...then clean what you can out of the harness that plugs into it...problem solved....

If all this ordeal is giving you NO VTEC, then it could be a VSS failure since among the things you need for vtec to work one of them is a certain speed registered at the ECU. If you don't have vtec then the VSS is probably bad, but if you do then its beyond the vss, maybe its in the speedo itself or some cable going to it. But. . . I'm more than likely wrong, good luck!

First off its VTEC not v-tech, v-tech is an electronics company, that doesn't make that great of electronics...
Stands for "Variable valve Timing and Electronic lift Control"
Second, ppl keep saying you might have a bad VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor)... either its not plugged in, or it went bad...
Did you do the swap yourself?
What swap does the car actually have? is it a Frankenstein (swapped non-vtec head with vtec head) or did you swap the engine? or did you swap the whole thing, engine and tranny?
Also you said you swapped clusters.. if you swapped clusters and nothing works.. and you haven't checked or replaced the VSS, then most likely it is the problem...
VTEC switchover, i think, is controlled by engine speed... i'm not too sure if it uses vehicle speed aslo...
