Default Max RPM allowed w/ stock (del sol si) cluster

I have a JDM B16a in my del sol si right now. 50shot N2O, plenty of bolt ons, bla bla bla....

Right now my redline is 8200 (or 8400, i forget) for my stock internal Gen 2 b16a.

My gauge cluster is from my original del sol si, so it's redline starts at 7,200 and ends at 8500, where the markings end.

My question is how far past 8500 can i rev, using the Si cluster i currently have, before i break the RPM gauge? Since i have a shift light that can be set to 12000, can i rev to say, 9,000 even though its past the max markings on the gauge itself? Will getting a DOHC del sol cluster help at all? I was having trouble getting a pic of one, does that go up to 9500, with the redline starting at 8000? I'm assuming that the only difference between the two is the overlay, i doubt honda made one capable of revving to only 8500 and another capable of revving to 9500, right?

FYI, and to avoid the smart asses that will say i'll blow my engine if i rev it that far.... I will be fully building the engine over the next 3-4 months. During that time I am working with L&M Engines in Hatboro PA (www.lmengines.com) to design and mass produce custom camshafts (several stages of cams) for several stages of the engine. ie. couple for stock engine, couple for stock engine w/ headwork, headwork & built sleeved bottom end w/ increased compression, etc....all the way up to my completed engine which will have have their custom runner independent throttle bodies and a 150+shot of nitrous. The engine will be able to rev to about 9,500 and we expect it to make power all the way til then also. I'll most likely be shifting at 9,000. Everything will be controlled w/ AEM EMS.

thanks for any info.

also, since i know a lot of h-t guys are Philly local. if you have ANY questions about L&M or services they can provide, contact me. I can get you good prices from them. they do all engine building IN HOUSE and have all the machines to do it right, along w/ an engine dyno!

You won't break the tach.

However, if you're going to be regularly exceeding the mechanical limits of the stock tach, why use it at all anyway? It certainly won't be helping you if it ends at 8500 and you have to shift at 9000 . . .

I'd get the del Sol VTEC cluster, or an aftermarket tach.

see...i was trying to aviod buying a VTEC cluster b/c they're hard to find, and i can't justify spending the money one it- especially b/c i just bought a SPA Techinques dual digital gauge reading nitrous pressure on top and engine (coolant) temp on bottom b/c my stock cluster needle gets stuck. So i already cut the hole into the dash for the gauge and was going to cover up the stock temp needle w/ the two micro switches. it would look clean, BUT. But i am going to need a EGT gauge for my 3rd cylinder for the nitrous i'm using (150+shot), so now i'm thinking of getting the VTEC cluster w/ a temp needle that works, and changing the temp part of the SPA gauge to EGT instead of coolant temp. But doing that will cost about $115 for the cluster and $85 extra for the EGT conversion. Thats $200 extra. i dunno.

Then I'll suggest this. Sell your cluster, get a non-tach cluster (don't know if the Sol ever offered one) and get an aftermarket tach. If you're planning to rev to 9k on a regular basis I think you should consider an aftermarket tach, as the stock tachs can be off as much as 4-500 rpms. Just my .02

whats the difference if its off by 4-500. i mean that does make a difference, but only when racing. And when racing i'm going off of the shift light, which is accurate anyways. does that make sense?
