Just dropped $2800 in my motor....wont start
Whats up guys Im currently in the middle of a build for my friend and we've hit a roadblock. He owns a 97 Civic and I pulled the Y8 and and put in a 75.5MM Z6 with cp low comp 9:1 pistons, and eagle rods and skunk2 intake manifold and throttle body. Its in the car and everything but it wont turn over. You just hear the compression and it will shoot a flame out the headers occasionally. Were running the Y8 distributor and we have no crank angle sensor. The distributor is bolted to the head and is plugged in. Were using the OBD2 wiring harness, but running a conversion harness running a P28 with Hondata s300 and we have the Z6 map loaded to it so I dont think its even looking for the crank sensor. Any help would be greatly appreciated, so many days of working on this between building the motor and everything and Im just brain dead and cant figure out what to do anymore. And we have fuel at the fuel rail, and we have spark. I cant help but think the timing is off but Im 90% sure its not.

Check the mechanical timing. The Y8 distributor does have a CKP sensor.
Are the plug wires installed in the correct firing order?
CEL codes?

I messed with some more today and still nothing. Spark plug wires are still in the correct order. It wont start so Im not getting any CEL. Im running the s300 with live datalogging while Im trying to start it and theres no error codes. And Im pretty confident on the mechanical timing. I assembled the motor and the line on the oil pump gear lined up with the part on the block, also the number 1 and 4 cylinder pistons were at the top of their travel. And I moved the cam as directed with the word "Up" and the line on the right was just above the surface of the head and the left line was just below as described in the factory service manual. This is what i used.

Unfortunately the motor we used didnt have any covers though, and to get the marks where they needed to be I layed a flat edge down on the cylinder head and lined up the cam that way. Also when I did this cylinder 1 and 4 valves were completely closed.

Compression test the cylinders.
Is spark bright white at all 4 plugs?
Do the injectors pulse fuel? Are they connected in the right firing order?

Im not sure about the spark because Im using a spark tester. But it glows a good orange. And I need to check the injectors. My friend hooked them up and hes not the best with cars, and Ill check if the injectors are shooting fuel. I know for sure I have good fuel pressure at the rail. Ill run out and check them now.

Just did a compression check
Cylinder 1-130
Cylinder 2-140
Cylinder 3-140
Cylinder 4-160
As for the fuel injectors everything seems to be in order.

Those number seems low to me, however it is a D16 with low compression pistons. I really dont like the difference in cylinder 1 and 4

I also gapped the rings according to the instructions the came with the cp pistons, and I aligned the rings as the factory service manual said to do

Re: Just dropped $2800 in my motor....wont start
Thank you for all your help. We got it started finally. I ended up setting the car at TDC and then took off the distributor cover and turned it back until the rotor lined up with the head. Then the car started, ran like crap due to vacuum lines but started none the less. However none of the holes to bolt the distributor line up, so were ordering the Z6 distributor and the conversion harness for it. Thanks again Ron for all your help. Ill be sure to post if the Z6 distributor works for sure so someone else can hopefully use this thread as a reference.

Got the OBD1 distributor and repinned it to the OBD2 plug and the car runs good. A little rough due to a few vacuum lines that need to be sorted out. But my problem was definitely the Y8 distributor on the Z6.
