Junkyard Build
Hi all,
I'm sort of a Honda newbie, but coming from the Mitsu/DSM world I have a pretty good foundation in JDM modding, racing, engine building, ect.
What I'd like to do is a super cheap 12s drag build. I've been poking around the forum for a few weeks and have come up with some ideas. Since I simply don't know the hardcore Honda tech, I wanted to get some feedback on my ideas for platforms, engines, and mods. Also I'd like to hear what you guys think would be the best combination of the above to achive my goal.
All builds will have the standard bolt-ons (i.e. cold-air intake, test-pipe, cat-back, ect.) and fuel system upgrades. I'm leaning towards a Del Sol chassis, but it looks like there's less overall aftermarket support for that platform. Are many components interchangeable between EG/EK civics and the Del Sol besides the engine stuff?
Thanks
BUILD:
PLATFORM
94-98 Del Sol, Civic or Integra
ENGINE
Block: B16a1, B18c or B18 LS/VTEC swap
Cams: BC Stage 2 Turbo
Pistons: CP or Mahle
Rods: Manley or Eagle
EMS: Hondata s300
Turbo: Garrett GT2871R, FMIC & pipes, Hondata Boost Solenoid, Peak Boost Manifold.
TRANSMISSION
Clutch: ACT Extreme Plate with Performance Street Disc or 6-puck disc
LSD: Cusco
SUSPENSION
Coilovers: D2 or TEIN,
Traction Bar: Avid or Full-Race
Camber Kit: Avid or Whiteline

Re: Junkyard Build
the del sol is an EG with a different body style and interior. You can swap all drivetrain and supsension components from any other EG civic to the del Sol. Most things that are not interchangeable are on the body and obviously some of the interior components. the del sol weighs 2414 lbs from the factory w/ the manual tranny compared to 2094 for the lightest EG (can't remember model) hatch so your lookin @ a little over 300 lbs more w/ the del Sol

Re: Junkyard Build
u want into 12's as cheap as possible..
i'll assume that means as smart as possible too.
dont get a del sol. they are very heavy for this kind of car
don't go naturally aspirated, too expensive to get you fast.
get a cheap light chassis
ie. civic. 92-95 hatches are where it's at but they are very sought after these days, but at least they're not rare.
coupes are not that much heavier, so either one should do. (avoid sunroofs, adds a lot of weight).
get a cheap engine and boost it.
i'd probably say just go with an LS engine, and boost it on stock internals with a good fuel management system and a GOOD tuner.
w/ good tires I think u could hit high 12's without too much fuss..
If you start getting into building internals and stuff, your prices are going to skyrocket,

Thanks everyone for your input. I've been trying to find a Hatch for a few months, but they've been either too expensive or too far gone for my purposes. But ill keep looking and you guys know what I get.

Re: Junkyard Build
for a mega cheap chassis try an EF. im just throwing that out there, they are basically boxy EGs. but a more common chassis is an eg so replacement parts are a dime a dozen not to say EFs are rare by any means but finding an EG is like finding Hydrogen

EF's are cool,
but obd0 is not.
it's odd, I always see lots of good hatch options fs on CL around here..
though I never really go see em in person so they could be junk.
but like I said before,
don't be afraid to go with a coupe, they're almost just as light.
and four door EG's are actually quite light as well.
did you know the 4door EG weighs about the same as a hatchback EK?.. !
