Default ignition starting problem - eg.

So,

today upon leaving my house i turned my key and the engine started and as soon as i let go of the key, the engine shut off.

so at the time thinking that i just let go too early, i did it again and it worked fine and i carried on with my day.

after doing my shopping and going back to the car it happened again this time i was sure it wasnt because i didnt hold it long enough, and the engine would shut off after i let go of the key. i tried to holdit on and rev the engine to keep it on and it turns on fine, revs fine, but once i let go of the key it shuts off and dies.

i checked my fuses for the starter motor under teh steering wheel and for teh sake of it, all of the ones in the engine bay and everything was fine.

so after sitting in the car for another 10 minutes trying to think what to do, i gave it another crank and it worked. - however i hadnt done anything which i believe was relative to the problem.

ps: stock d series motor.

any ideas ? anyone have this problem? etc.

i plan to do an ecu test in the coming few days.

thanks for the reply,

so your saying its the ignition barrel that needs replacing?

i was thinking it was the main relay of the car.

care to give a description of what had happened/why and what i need to do to fix?

That's exactly what was happening to mine. If you think that it's your main relay, test it out.

I can't remember exactly (this was more than 10 years ago) but basically the contacts in the key tumbler were worn down and no longer making contact.
