I need some help on my sohc
Okay, i know my sohc will always be slow and i should just swap, but i was wondering, what are the best ways to increase hp and torque on my d16y7 1.6 sohc. what would you say would be the best bang for the buck. i'm a college student, so i really don't have a lot of money to do this with. but i was just curious for all you smarties, whats the quickest, cheapest way to tweak up my motor. i appreciate any ideas and any help. don't flame cuz i'm not rich and can't afford a swap+turbo etc. thanks guys

Turbo.
Cheaper than a swap and more power.
http://www.homemadeturbo.com it may take a while to build because of the cost of a turbo (around 300-400) but it's worth it in the end.
Or just throw a 50 shot of nitrous on there.

when doing either of those, are there going to be must have performance replacements? like things i will have to replace or they will break? how much do you think it would cost to build the whole turbo kit

the y7 is the non vtec sohc motor...
I'd change out the tranny...and intake manifold.....I believe the y7 had the top mounted throttle body correct....
I'd Get the EX/Si D16z6 or 96-00 y8 tranny for better gearing....same with the manifold.....cheapie header or get the EX exhuast manifold....with these 2 things it will be night and day!!!!!

how much of a difference will i see with the y8's tranny and intake manifold. i've thought about this. i think this makes up the gist of the "mini-me" conversion. about how much would a y8 tranny run me?

got my t3 off ebay for 180 dollars. had everything mounted up on my sohc when i go to fire it up and the turbo leaks oil.
whatever you do, if its turbo, be sure to rebuild it or buy a new one.

Almost a mini me...minus the y8 head....
the tranny will make a big difference believe me I did it.....the intake mani I do no have personal experience with but it will definately add something, its side mounted and will alow a better air flow...

Re: (SlowCivicHmm)
if you have the money you can swap out the intake for the new skunk2 d16 mani. I've heard a lot of good things about that. As for me, I just installed a turbo in my d16y7 and it's more of a headache and costly then it should be. But that's just my experience. If you do go turbo then get the greddy turbo for the 92-95 civic sohc's cause that the best on for this type of engine, and it bolts on perfect.

Re: (phthalo)
make sure you read this thread - https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=335078
small things:
AEM CAI, header, exhaust
medium things:
camshaft, cam gear, y8 manifold/TB swap
large things:
y8 or z6 transmission or final drive swap
y8 or z6 head swap
greddy turbo kit
custom turbo kit
and then there are a bunch of other things, but you can decide what to do for yourself.
I was in your same position, I started out with a D15B7 (SOHC non-vtec). I decided to go the NA route. My first mods were intake and exhaust, and they basically just made it louder. My next mod was a z6 SOHC VTEC head and manifold swap. I can feel the power difference, but the long DX transmission doesnt put the power to the ground very smoothly. My next planned modifications are to put an SRR 4.7 final drive in (making the gear ratio's shorter, hence better acceleration), and a more aggressive camshaft from exospeed (to allow the engine to take in more air and release more exhaust, adding horsepower). Basically, work with what you got. There are a ton of things you can do to a d-series a most of them are fairly inexpensive.

Re: (BauleyCivic)
Yeah what he said is a good start.....a d series is fun to learn on and you can get pretty quick for the money and if it blows a new engine can be had for cheap!!
