I am currently putting my z6 back together after a blown head gasket. I talked to a guy on here about how to make sure you have TDC. Here is what i have done. Granted, I am about a day away from crankiing mine up, but I am pretty confident this method will work with maybe a minor timing adjustment.
First of all there is a mark on the rear timing cover that allows you to set your cam correctly. On the rear cover that sits behind the timing gear look to the bottom left and there is a little mark. Rotate the cam gear till its in the "up position and line the little line engraved into the gear at the bottom left with the mark on the rear timing cover on the bottom left. Your cam is now set.
Now for the crank, the easiest way to get TDC is to put a long screwdriver or other object in the #1 cylinder and turn the crank. When #1 piston reaches its highest point you should be at TDC. Also, the keyway on the crank should be pretty close to top center.
Also, before you attempt to crank up your engine, rotate the crank with the belt installed a few times to make sure your valves wont hit pistons.
Hopefully this is all correct, maybe some of the other guys on here can add to or correct me!

Damn i never thought of doing that. I bet it would have saved me alot of problems, but now im use to finding it off the crank now. Free bump for more help.

the engine goes tdc two times. I think u should take off distrubutor and watch for the rotor to rotate to the 1st spark plug. If u just watch the screwdriver go up and down, u might be 180 degrees off tdc and that won't be good

Um you guys know there is a mark on the timing belt gear and the oil pump that designates TDC right? there is also a mark on the crank pulley and lower timing belt cover that will match with TDC
i would NOT stick something in the cylinder.

Well it worked for me..mine cranked up on the first turn of the key and the timing was perfect, valve clearance was good. everything was cool. As long as you are careful, I dont see how looking at marks on the crank is anymore accurate than actually seeing exactly where the piston reaches TDC. Just my 2 cents..

lol dude you are missing the point
you are shoving something in the cylinder
what happens if you score the cylinder wall? what about the threads on the head for the spark plug?
there are marks all over the crank pulley oil pump timing belt cear and lower tbelt cover for a reason. sure the screwdriver thing works, but i would never do it.
