Your problem could be:

-No/ low coolant
-Thermostat not opening
-Radiator is bad
-Cooling fans are not turning on

You summed it up pretty good. I'd check with the thermostat first. That's where the problem was on my last two cars

first of all make sure theres coolant in you car. You should of noticed if you busted a hose, but maybe not. Look in the overflow tank. If theres coolant in there thats not your problem. Then move on to check the t-stat and such. Does your fan turn on?
