How to tell if it's a vtec

How to tell if it's a vtec
A friend of mine is thinking of purchasing a '98 Civic EX (auto). The current owner of the car says it's the 1.6L vtec engine. However, the engine doesn't say vtec on it like how it does on other engines. Is there a way to tell if it really is a vtec engine or not?
Thanks.
Thanks.

Look for a little can shaped doodad (VTEC solenoid) around the back left side of the valve cover.
I doubt that they are though. The manuals were, but I doubt the autos were.

Re: (swatdog)
yes it is vtec. all ex models came with vtec. Starting from the eg and up. and just cause it dose'nt say vtec dose not mean anything. Just like if stupid is not written on someone dose mean they are'nt. But you can look at the vtec solinoid on the back of the valve cover it is round and has a wire coming out of it.

yes it's vtec... unless the guy swapped out the stock motor for another... not likely...
Check the engine code... it's to the left of the header/exhaust manifold on the engine block... his should be "d16z6" if so it's vtec.
the vtec solinoid is also a good indicator... but if you were REAL shady you could just mount one there... again NOT likely.

Sorry didn't look at the year of the car he's looking at.... I always assume 92-95 in this section.

Wow, talk about your all time bad ideas. Seriously though, check the engine code D16z6 or D16y8 are vtec. Everything else (udsm and sohc) is not.

Re: How to tell if it's a vtec (BauleyCivic)
People ******* crack me up man. If you know anything at all about Hondas in general then you would now that an Ex comes with vtec. If it makes you feel better grab a magic marker and write vtec really big on the valve cover, also get vtec stickers all over the outside so then infact you know for sure that it does have vtec.
