My 1992 civic si valve cover looked exactly like that. They made the D16Z6 vtec motors for a while don't know how many years or what but I know it was in the early run of the 92-95 generation where they didn't say vtec on the valve covers. You can tell that the head is vtec two ways though, 1992-1995 vtec heads obviously have the vtec solenoid which is the thing sticking off the front right side of the head with a green plug coming out of it on the second picture. The other way to identify it is the placement of the spark plug wires. The plug wires go into the front of the valve cover on vtec motors and are 1.6L. All other sohc motors from 92-95 are 1.5L and the spark plug wires go in toward the back of the valve cover.

Re: (Hondacivic90ed)
thanks Hondacivic90ed, i think you're right because i've noticed the VTEC logo only on the late vtec model valve covers.
another question though, how much $ can someone estimate this head to be as seen in the pictures (its got about 80k on it)? thanks

i have seen them go for 150 - 300 depending on mileage.
it is definately a z6 head
looks to be in good condition.
one thing you should do to check the condition. turn the head upside down, put cyl 1 at TDC, make sure there is a spark plug in it (to seal the hole)
then pur oil in around the valves (fill it up to the top)
wait for a bit and see if any oil leaks past the valves and out the intake or exhaust ports.
if no oil leaks past, or very very little after it sits for a while then you know the valves are sealing correctly. do this to every one, you can do cyl 1 and 4 at the same time, and cyl 2 and 3 at the same time
also check and see if it is warped or not with a machined straight edge, if its warped it needs to be milled so the headgasket will seal.
i would do those things before using it, to save yourself some time and headache if something is fucked up

My ex-girlfriends car was a 94' Civic EX and it has a d16z6 with vtec written on the valve cover.

ok i will, ur wrong
Z6 comes out at around 90-110 on average... and the way you can tell is because theres a circular block stamp on ur head...

Re: How to identify a d16z6 head. (mizzoEG)
there is a stamped code on the side of the head between the 3rd and 4th exhaust ports neerer the vc gasket. i think there was a thread not too long ago that decoded all of these. it's the only true gaurentee that it's a z6, or anything else for that reason.

Re: (mizzoEG)
the best way to get a clear answer backed by numbers is to check out the all motor forum and look through some dyno threads to find guys with similar setups. otherwise my guess or anyones is as good as yours
