which o2 are you eplacing? Primary ro secondary. Either one is easy to remove, though I would recommend that you use a proper o2 sensor socket to avoid damaging the new sensor

You don't really need a socket. Just some good ol' WD-40 and a nice wrench. If you know how to change your oil, this should be a piece of cake. o2 sensors are expensive. Go to a junk yard and pick one up for like $40...They all work...

The one in the header is the primary O2 sensor. I have a 96 civic ex, and it took me about 10 min to replace, its easy. But the dealership price for my sensor was 200. So the dealership is gay. Just buy hte part and take 10 min out of your life to put it in.

OEM sensors are expensive, no doubt about it. $200 +/- from a dealer is correct - and wouldn't be a ripp off.
i just replaced my secondary with a bosch (aftermarket) OEM replacement (that is kind of an oxymoron...) from pep boys. it was $90 and fit perfect, and even had the correct plug attached. they don't always stock it, i had to go to three different stores.
they're not always easy to remove, especially if you live in a place where you get a lot of rain/snow/salt etc. yours has been in for 5 +/- years, it may not just pop right out. for $50, you may want to just let them do it. it's real easy to strip the old sensor trying to remove it if you don't have the right tools, and even those special sockets don't always work (i proved that myself). both of my old o2 sensors were really frozen (96 coupe from NY) and if we hadn't already removed the header/exhaust from the car, we may not have gotten them off at all. not much room to work under there.
unfortunatley for me, replacing the sensor did not fix my problem. (CEL #63) i think i have cat issues. what is wrong with your g/f's car that the mechanic wants to replace the 02 sensor? unless you're way over 100k miles, you technically shouldn't have to.

Well they hooked it up to thier machine and thats what they recomended primary heated o2 sensor replacment. I verified with the mechanic it was was the one in the header and not the cat. So where is good place to buy the nut. What tools should I have????

the tools needed: WD-40, There is a socket for changing out an O2 sensor, but u can also just an open ended wrench (which is prob the easier thing to do), and a little patience.
