Re: how to get engine legal
sweety it depends.
First the motor has to be the same year or newer than your car.
Second its easier to legalized an american motor than it is a jdm motor.
Third, All electrical components including engine harness conversions must be obd2 if your car is 96-00 or if the engine your swapping over is obd2 when your car is obd1. This includes obd2 fuel injectors, and obd2 distributor as well as obd2 alternator. You must also swap over the CKF sensor if needed.
Fourth, a cat must be installed and fully functional
Fifth, No check engine lights and visually the engine must look appealing with no loose wires hanging out or anything like that.
Six, ECU must be USDM and NOT JDM
Seven, If using a JDM motor than you must swap the Evap Purge solenoid components from a usdm motor over to the intake manifold.
Eight, motors like B16b (ctr) will NOT pass because America never made a B16b motor in the U.S. therefore its not legal. Other motors like the jdm ITR b18c or jdm GSR b18c can pass since the usdm version is b18c1 or b18c5. Same goes for jdm b16a and in usdm its b16a2, b16a3 civic si and del sol.
Nine, No mods whatsoever including header, manifold or air intake unless its carb legal.
Ten, if you pass then you can get your car smogged every 2 years like any regular car out there and cops cant hassle you unless you modify something.. like "forgetting" the cat :]

Re: how to get engine legal
wow i just got reminded of how bad i would hate to follow those rules.
NO MODS??? (non carb legal)
Does that mean no boosting? OR are most store made kits carb legal?
But by the way it looks..if you drive a honda in cali...i think you should keep it locked up unless you drive it for a day and never park it then your good.
Sometimes i wish there were more of a honda follow in my town/ surrounding area but i will stay content will what it is to keep the thefts down.

* If your motor is obd2 and your car is obd1 then you need to also use a obd2 ecu. This means you could either swap the engine harness and use one from a obd2a/b motor or modify the harness yourself.

Re: how to get engine legal
I know this is a Civic/Del Sol thread and I don't own either car, but there are some useful info here.
Wow, I didn't know that the engine had to be the same year or newer than the car. I did a JDM swap on my '95 VR-4. The engine was from a '96 VR-4, but my mechanic said it had to be a '97 or '98 because some of the vacuum hose setup were different and looks to be the same of the '97-'98 VR-4s. Anyway, all sensors from my USDM engine were put on to my JDM and it passed smog with flying colors on the first try. Lucky me.
I couldn't use the downpipe that came with the engine though. The USDM pipe had a O2 sensor on it. The JDM one was just a straight solid pipe.
