Default how easy should it be to put trans into reverse with housing off?

i am having problems with my 97 civic cx s40 transmission.....it will no go into reverse. I have the trans housing off and when i try to put it into reverse it will no go unless i either smack the shift linkage or if the reverse shift fork holder in off. If the reverse shift fork holder is removed then the trans will go into reverse with no problems. Also it will go into all other gears with no problems

is the holder possibly bent? It sounds like that or it isn't seated properly..
