Not necessarily. Someones oil pressure could be low enough that VTEC won't work and the CEL won't come on.

You can hook it up to a light to see if it is working or not. All you need to do is tap into the green wire off the silenoid and then ground the light.

Edit: I THINK the same principle would apply for a switch. Just hook the switch to the green silenoid wire and then hook up the ground.

My friend did that with his 91 CRX w/d16z6 swap, hooked the vtec to a button on the shifter, so to engage vtec at any rpm. Last I heard hes still raping integras and em1s with his dseries setup. I'll find out tonight at work what he did to make it work and get back at you.

Yeah, what he said.

Just because you can engage it whenever you want doesn't mean you are now making "mad vtack powa". Honda has it in a pretty damn close to perfect spot on stock compression and cams.

That being said, the light will be the best bet but I would pull codes anyway because certain codes are stored in the ECU but don't bring a CEL up on the dash. You could have another issue that is causing it not to engage.

Did you happen to check your oil level and make sure it's good? How about an oil pressure gauge?

What type of chip is in the P28? If it's an ebay chip, for a GSR, it could be looking for a knock sensor and you don't have one wired in or do you have it wired in?

honestly, i know, but i refuse to help someone that doesnt explain the problem. for all i know he is just doing it to hit the switch earlier, so i give no help. but i do agree w/ you, and yes, the switch is the same as the light.
