High RPM smoking? Need Help.
Okay, first of all my car is a 1994 Honda Civic Ex with about 125000 miles on it. It is totally stock. My question is what would be the cause of smoke coming out of the exhaust when at high rpms such as between 5000 and 7000rpms? It doesn't smoke any before that, I know that is right around where VTEC turns on but what would cause the VTEC to smoke and not below it? My friend was driving behind me when he noticed that this is what happened. Now I don't know if it has any effect but I very rarely get on my car enough to bring it in to VTEC territory, so would that have anything to do with it? Would a fuel injector cleaner poured in the gas tank help? One more thing, the gasket for the timing belt cover leaks and I know I need to replace it, but would that have anything to do with the smoke. I lose maybe 1 quart of oil every 3000 miles, but I guess that could come from the leak as well as the burning of some oil?
Any help is appreciated, I just want to find out what is wrong so I can fix it.
Thanks
DK

Re: High RPM smoking? Need Help. (chirp3rd)
yeah i have noticed the same thing on my 94 civic with about the same mileage. not sure if it is white or more of a grey smoke. i kinda doubt it is white smoke (head gasket) so i am guessing gray. (worn rings?) but if anyone had any other insight that would be cool.

My friend told me that it was black smoke so I guess it is like someone else said, that I have worn rings. He also told me that it really didn't smoke until around 6-7 grand too.
Is there anyway to fix this problem without tearing down the motor and replacing the rings?
Thanks

Yes please do confirm this for me. I would love for it to only be that the engine is just running rich in high rpms. Please?
Thanks

i have the same problem but its coz my sparks are igniting engine oil. Check your spark plugs and see if they are wet. If they are wet then you MAY have cruddy spark plug seals and you are burning oil. It can also be because of a rich fuel mixture, however, after wiping my sparks (not even replaced the seals yet) i have yet to notice such black smoke coming out.
oh yeah...the spark plug leads and chambers should all be DRY.

blue smoke is oil, black smoke is fuel, white is moisture......although i am not saying that is what your problem is

Alright, thank you for the help. It does a lot into making me feel a little better about the engine.

CIVIKSI: that is so not true.... honda's no matter what kinda motor run on the leaner side... thats another reason they are know for good gas mileage.
