If you unplugged them from the harness how are they still getting power?

the headlight plug is only an activation signal its not the supply of power, he most likely has a add on harness for that. which means the relay is bad, hopefully its not a proprietary one like mine is :/

My McCullough HID's didn't. They plugged into the headlight harness for ground/power, then another line came off the ballast for the HID bulbs. That was it.

My hid's on my 07 ford fusion were like that as well but created a new problem, the BULB out warning, had to buy some resistor boxes to use them without the constant warnings from the dash.

It can work either way neither are wrong but it is far more reliable to run an add-on harness for the power, some wiring on these cars can be a little old and be prone to failure.

As a further response to a custom harness, if it was my choice I would have done this as well but the kid I got came with a power harness so thats what i used.
