Hey guys, first honda, first 5 spd!
I just traded my exploder for a 97 ex with 140k and a 5spd. It's not a vtec engine, I believe it's a 16 valve SOHC. It's pretty slow, I know. It's bone stock save the aftermarket exhaust chrome tipped. It's not one of those huge tin can exhausts, but it is a bit noisy. I think I am going to buy some rims from a local guy, as hubcaps are just I think I want a short shifter, some tintage, and then a b16 or b18. Who knows, I'm just happy to be getting 35mpg

I don't think anyone here will (or should) laugh at or hate your car. It looks to be a nice, clean EX. Just take your time and don't hastily modify it. Enjoy H-T and utilize it as the excellent resource that it can be.

Re: Hey guys, first honda, first 5 spd! (Unta)
EX's are soch VTEC
learn everything about the 5 speed...
Then go to k20a.org
and put a k-series in that ek
before that, a full suspension upgrade, will make the car alot more fun to drive.
koni/gc setup, asr subframe brace, big sway bars...
wheels? rota: slipstream, subzeros, etc
then swap out the rear drums with some integra discs or go to fastbrakes for an "awsome kit for the decent price"
if you are planning on doing a swap, don't mod your engine too much... an intake (ebay short/cai) should be fine - just to make it sound better when you accelerate
if the swap is too out of reach for now, wheels and suspension should be your first thing, best improvment for the cash you put in...

Re: Hey guys, first honda, first 5 spd! (bpr0422)
a K swap will never happen, sorry. This is a car between my exploder, and my 95 m3 which will be had before next summer. We're looking at a b18 or b16, cold air, and exhaust. Maybe some FI if I can find it reasonably priced local. The tired are brand new Bridgestone Potenzas I think they're called, but I want rims instead of ******* hcaps.

can't see ****
i would just keep the y8 stock, do I/H/E and little stuff like that. get some konis / gcs, sticky tires, motor mounts, and the lightest flywheel out there. you'll have a cheap fun reliable car. it won't be that fast in a straight line but it will still make you smile. a b16 will cost a lot and is really not that much faster than the y8. if you're gonna swap get a b18c or a b20 vtec.
if you want to boost it make sure you get it tuned well. if you need a dependable car i'd stick with the NA honda.

I don't know why you thought people were going to laugh at you. It doesn't have a giant wing or 22" dubz on it, which WOULD cause people to ridicule it.
If I were in your situation, I wouldn't heavily modify it. You say you've got an e36 m3 on the way; make that your dedicated "racer" and have your Civic as your daily driver. Focus on just taking care of it; wash it, wax it, maintain it, etc. etc. New wheels and suspension would be good. Just revel in the fact that you get 30+ MPG. Maybe throw in I/H/E (Intake/Header/Exhaust) if you'd like. Short shifter is an excellent idea. Add in a weighted shift **** and new bushings and you'll just want to keep shifting gears until you run out of gas. Tint is a fine idea as well.
And regarding your Bridgestone Potenza tires, those are pretty popular tires and hold up fine. If they're brand new, maybe you could roll on them for a while and get more out of them. Or just stuff 'em away for a while and have them as backup or what not.
Edit: I noticed this is your first manual transmission car. An excellent mod that costs nothing is to hone your skills. Work on getting smooth, rev matching downshifts, heeltoe once you get to that point, all that good stuff.

Thanks for the help AntF. For the laughs, I meant the cheap exhaust pipe. Thanks for defining I/H/E. Will I really see preformance out of an exhaust? Also, what are headers, I am sooo new. Anyway, the potenzas are brand new, I think he said 20 miles on them, home from costco. Rev, those pipes look nice, but I certainly cant afford them. I make 5.15 an hour and tips, and get like 20-30 hours a week. My dad is going to pay for a tint job, he works at a Toyota dealership so hopefully I can get cheaper servicing. Who knows. I will try to maintain it though indeed. How lengthy of a procedure is it to install a short shifter? I have NEVER worked on cars before, let alone changed the oil. This is my car to practice on now.

Re: (Unta)
No problem at all. The performance gain through the I/H/E path is quite minimal, maybe 10HP TOPS. But at least your car will be making a nice noise. Keep in mind that if you get another exhaust, you'll have to live with the noise it makes EVERYDAY. If you don't mind it, sure go for it, but just something to keep in mind.
Nice deal on the tint. I'm the typical poor college student myself, so I'm having a hard time finding tint for a price that works with me.
I just installed my short shifter about a couple of weeks ago. I've never changed oil in my life. I have no mechanical aptitude. In otherwords, it's no problem. There's guides here on H-T that you can look up once you nab a short shifter. Heck, I can help you out if you need it. I will advise you that, like me, first time around, things will take longer than you expect. Some people said the short shifter job was 2 hours. It took me 6. No matter, I got it done, but just be prepared for that.
Definitely learn how to change your oil. Life long lesson.
A header is also known as an exhaust manifold. If you were to look at your engine from the front with the hood popped up, it would be "in front" of your engine, with 4 pipes running downwards. Here's an aftermarket example.

About your current pay...no sweat, just look for deals. The H-T market can find you some really good deals. I really recommend looking for stuff there. I managed to get my LS mesh wheels for $200 off Craigslist (if you know of that site) and lowering springs for $80 here on H-T. I was going to buy this exhaust: https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1414740. But I decided I didn't need it at the moment. I suggest you look into that exhaust. It's not a coffee can, and doesn't sound like a man letting out an ungodly fart every time you accelerate.

Re: (AntF)
Jesus, 2 hours and 6 both seem long for the shifter. I'll try get a local AZHT member to help me out in exchange for some cool car pictures or something.

Yeah, 6 hours for my shifter was super long...I got it done so that's all the matters hahahah. Yeah, if you could get someone to help out, I'm sure you could it get it done in +/- 1 hour. If you can't find anyone though, really, just go at it yourself. It's not a big task at all, and you'll get some valuable time under the car. And if you get stuck, just come back on HT and I or anyone else can help you out. I'm about to head out right now so I can't IM ya, but you can shoot me a PM anytime. Glad to be of help.
