Help. Speedo trouble.
I Recently Picked up a 92 Civic Dx Hatchback and am having Speedo Trouble.
Have read threads and am baffled. Occasional Speedo operation perfectly. most times jerky movement or stuck at around 20mph. Visually checked the speed sensor and wires. no apparent chafing anywhere.. Head appears to look good, kindof curious as to how exactly solder the head. could someone help here...

Re: Help. Speedo trouble.
Well, at this time i have read even more posts... brought my baby back into the shop, swapped out tranny fluid and balanced tires.. still have jerky speedo movement. Gonna tear the dash apart again... btw for anyone interested. Can change dash lighting with Plasti-kote high temp paint.. dip and dry before install. careful with the connectors though. now have an orange dash assembly to go with the car. have pic in my album of my 2 hondas..

Re: Help. Speedo trouble.
Nope, no CEL. yesterday (still doing routine maintenance) Drained and refilled tranny, using side fill plug. Something that has been done has temporarily fixed the speedo problem. Still intermittent though on the failing instead of intermittent on the operation. BTW i wanted to personally thank you for all of the definitive posts that you have posted throughout my exploring. very direct and helpful.
up to now.
Checked the VSS connectors to eliminate corrosion problems.
Checked the voltage output and grounds on the harness.
Checked the speed sensor mechanical parts. (no apparent probs other than wear)
Checked the instrument panel cluster and re-melted solder joints.
Checked for continuity at the VSS connector.
Still haven't checked continuity between VSS connector and ECU.
Checked the wiring harness for rub/fray anywhere. haven't noticed any.
curious about dismantling the front plastic on my instrument cluster.
Any suggestions??
Trying to get my baby fixed hehe.

Re: Help. Speedo trouble.
Here in alaska... especially southeast hehe. Not a heck of a lot of parts available. Baranof motors (Shop I'm with) has the largest yard in sitka. No civics even close to my year so... Pretty sure the cluster is ok. was thinking about swapping out just my speedo needle assembly if possible. Odometer and tripmeter are working properly. other gauges are also working properly.

dude its your cluster. the same thing happened to the cluster in my brothers 92 cx hatch. we put another one out of an ex and it works perfectly. i bet if you tap on your cluster when it gets stuck at 20 it will move...

Re: Help. Speedo trouble.
Ok. Finally fixed the speedo problem. It was in fact my speedo head unit.
The solder points that i re-soldered weren't done perfectly. After re-soldering once again I haven't had a speedo problem since.
