Default Is A Heat Shield Really Necessary?

My heat shield over my header is rattling and its very loud. I tried tightening it, removing it and retightening and that didn't work. So is the heat shield really necessary?

The heat shield serves a purpose but, you could just wrap your header an cut down on some of the under hood temps.

What purpose does it actually serve, just to lower the under hood temps so your intake isn't hot or something?

I wish I had my old heatshield back to cover-up my ugly-*** Header.
Keep it, even if you take it off.

if you take it off on an isuzu trooper 2, the floor will catch on fire, but i havent caught a civic on fire yet, knocking on wood.

does matter dunno what people are saying but like SiFan said you could wrap your headers with this fiberglass material that ive seen DC use. Take it off if you get the ceramic headers or any aftermarket but stock does matter. My VX (only vtec with the wideband sensor) has the sensor right in the middle of the heatshield.

i am assuming that you have a stock [cast iron] exhaust manifold if you have a heatshield. yes, it plays a big role by preventing the manifold from cooling to quickly...

depending upon where you live, the manifold will crack without the headshield, esp. on a cold rainy day...

if you have a header, you don't need it...

I had a D16Y7 without the heatshield in my mostly stock '96 fo-door and for those of you who don't know the cat is part of the upper section of the header. I took off the heatshield and within 2 months of beating the **** out of that motor the header split open right in the center of the top of the header where they all join. I was living in Pensacola Florida at the time....so the combination of high revving (relatively speaking) and medium temp extremes in the winter split that sucker when it was expanding and shrinking from heat.
