Default Gas tank installation fail?

I have a 1997 Civic Sedan DX. Bought the car with a hole in the tank. The car was dumped, and the previous owner scraped it one too many times. I went and sourced a fuel tank at a local salvage yard and every single ek civic gas tank i looked at was different than mine. My tank had a twist off floater and the others had screw ons. Those tanks also had extra vac hoses or somethin' that my tank didnt have. I installed the new tank, capped off the vac or whatever lines my tank didnt have, and went to fill up. now it will only let me pump in lika a gal. per min. if i try to force the rest of the gas in it'll squirt gas bacc out of the neck all over the floor.. any ideas what ive couldve done wrong?

First off you had a SUPER rare gas tank on your original car. I'm not even kidding. There was basically only one year and model of car that came like that ... *some* 1997 sedans. Incidentally the fuel level meter in your old tank actually has decent resale value because it actually retrofits into 5G Civics -- check my DIY here for more info....

So that explains why they're different. Of course, none of this helps your problem that you're having right now: can't fill the damn tank. Maybe can you take some pics of the fittings that were different?

problem is you're using the wrong tank. capping off fittings is causing your problem.

Using the other style of 96-00 tank should be fine, but kyden is right about covering up fittings - that is probably causing a problem.

Damm I did NOT know this. Good info bro. No wonder why I had a hard time at EVERY salvage yard smh. EVERY civic they had 96-00 had the same gas tank and it didn't match mine. I'll try and take pics of the fittings

Wrong tank: negative. But I'm pretty sure your other point about capping off the fittings is the prob. Its probably not getting the right vacuum

I still have my old gas tank with a pinch size hole in but. From what I got from ur DIY; the important part is the fuel sending/floater unit
